AEW Dynasty 2026 is the crossroads where AEW either reinvents or repeats
The Dynasty Stakes
We are officially at that point in the calendar where the AEW faithful start sweating over the Dynasty card. Looking at the landscape heading into April 2026, it is clear that Tony Khan is standing at a major intersection. We have seen the pendulum swing from the work-rate-at-all-costs era to a more character-driven focus, and Dynasty is the proving ground for that shift.
The World Title Conundrum
Let’s talk about the main event. MJF is currently carrying the AEW World Championship, and frankly, he is doing the best character work of his career. However, the prospect of him facing Konosuke Takeshita isn’t just a match—it’s a referendum on the company’s future. If Takeshita doesn’t walk out with the gold, AEW is effectively telling us that the International ceiling is his permanent home. I am picking Takeshita to dethrone him in a 30-minute masterpiece that finally cements him as the global face of the promotion. It’s time to stop treating him like a challenger and start treating him like the ace.
The Tag Team Division's Identity Crisis
Remember when the Tag Team Division was the backbone of this company? I am looking at you, Young Bucks versus FTR era. Right now, the division feels aimless. The upcoming Dynasty title defense featuring the Gunn Club—they have evolved, sure—against the BCC duo of Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta feels like a stylistic clash that could save the tag belts. Claudio and Yuta need to win this. Putting the belts on them isn't about nostalgia; it’s about establishing the BCC as a dominant force that feels dangerous again, rather than just a group of guys standing in the background during promos.
The biggest mistake AEW can make at Dynasty is playing it safe with the mid-card titles. We don't need another 'good' match; we need a headline-grabber.
The Women’s Division Pivot
Jamie Hayter versus Stardom sensation Mina Shirakawa for the AEW Women’s World Championship is the sleeper candidate for Match of the Night. Hayter has been the undisputed anchor of the division since her return, and Mina brings that big fight feel that the division desperately craves. I am picking Hayter to retain, but only after a brutal, stiff encounter that forces the company to put these two in the main event slot for future pay-per-views. It is time to stop hiding the women behind the men on the card.
The TBS and International Titles
- TBS Championship: Willow Nightingale is the heart and soul of AEW, but she is currently spinning her wheels. I expect her to drop the title to Kris Statlander in a heel turn that finally gives Statlander the edge she has been missing since leaving the Best Friends.
- International Championship: PAC is the only man who can hold this belt and make it feel like a world title. He is going to retain against Kyle Fletcher in what will likely be the fastest, most violent 15-minute sprint on the card.
The current state of AEW reminds me of the WCW transition period in late 1997. There is so much talent in the locker room, but the booking needs to stop being so predictable. Dynasty 2026 needs to be the night where we see a genuine shift in power dynamics. If we leave this show with the same champions we entered with, AEW is going to lose the casual audience that is currently on the fence. It's time to pull the trigger on the new guard.
