The comedy act that became a masterclass
Chad Gable is no longer El Grande Americano. The WWE active roster page confirmed it this week, quietly moving the original version of the character to the alumni section. As WrestleTalk confirmed, the character has been retired.
It is easy to forget how we got here. In early 2025, Gable was stuck in a creative rut, dropping matches to every masked wrestler on the roster. His solution was to put on a mask himself, a comedic pivot that threatened to bury a world-class amateur wrestler in low-card comedy. Yet, Gable won the Speed Championship on May 7, 2025, proving that elite in-ring performance can elevate even the silliest premise.
But the booking of that title win was atrocious. Gable captured the title by defeating Dragon Lee on the WWE Speed web series. He utilized a loaded mask to steal a pinfall with just over a minute remaining in the five-minute time limit, a cheap finish that did little to establish the new championship's credibility.
The real turning point was completely unplanned. Gable suffered a torn rotator cuff in June 2025, a setback that should have killed the storyline. Instead, the mask was handed to Ludwig Kaiser, who took the gimmick to Mexico's AAA promotion and turned it into a massive heel act.
Speaking on the Good Karma Wrestling podcast, Gable reflected on how the injury shaped his career. In an interview with F4WOnline, Gable expressed that he is currently feeling "creatively fulfilled" following the conclusion of the program. He credited the injury with creating the necessary space for the narrative to grow.
"That’s what wrestling is. The story is not written from the beginning, the ending isn’t determined from the beginning. We can go a million different directions, sometimes it creates magic."
A torn shoulder and a $50,000 mask
That magic culminated on May 30, 2026, at AAA Noche de Los Grandes in Monterrey. In a high-stakes Máscara contra Máscara match, Kaiser defeated Gable, forcing him to unmask. The match was a masterclass in psychology, blending Mexican lucha traditions with European positioning.
Gable later recalled that the ringside brawl with Kaiser was the moment he knew the gimmick had clicked. On the podcast, Gable noted that the physical exchanges felt "completely genuine," a feeling he had not experienced since his Olympic wrestling days. The audience’s emotional investment transformed a comedy act into a blood feud.
The financial legacy of that match is still being felt. Today, WWE closed a charity auction for the mask Kaiser wore during that Monterrey bout. In partnership with Fanatics Authentic, the match-used, frayed mask sold for an astonishing $50,035, with all proceeds going to the Dr. Sonrisas Foundation.
The final price blew past the initial projections of $15,000, as Ringside News reported. It is a staggering figure for a piece of memorabilia from a storyline that started as a throwaway mid-card comedy act. It shows the deep connection the audience developed with the two men behind the masks.
With the mask gone, Gable has returned to Raw under his own name, starting a redemption arc. He is currently on an apology tour, trying to make amends with the luchadores he disrespected during his masked run. He has saved Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee from beatdowns, but his biggest challenge remains at home.
The limits of the apology tour
Last Monday in London, Gable attempted to apologize to his former Alpha Academy stablemates. The segment was a painful reminder of his past heel behavior. Maxxine Dupri flatly rejected his apology, telling him that his remorse was hollow and self-serving.
This rejection was the right booking decision. If Gable is going to be a top babyface, he cannot just slide back into his old role without consequences. His past treatment of Otis and Tozawa was abusive, and a simple apology should not wash that away.
The crowd needs to see him suffer a bit more before they fully embrace him. Gable's first match back on Raw without the mask occurred on June 15, 2026, against Rusev. It was a physical, grueling encounter that showcased Gable's classic belly-to-belly suplexes and deadlift Germans.
Gable won that match, but the toll on his body was obvious. That brings us to the upcoming Raw on June 29, 2026, in Atlantic City, where Gable is scheduled to face JD McDonagh in a singles match. This is a vital test for Gable’s new babyface persona, offering a fascinating stylistic clash.
Breaking down the tape: Gable vs. McDonagh
McDonagh is the perfect opponent for this stage of Gable's career. The Judgment Day member is a technical savant who excels at making his opponents look great while maintaining a vicious, heel edge. He will force the former Olympian to wrestle a clean, athletic style.
The tactical matchup is intriguing. Gable’s game is built on torque, low-level single-legs, and his signature rolling German suplexes. McDonagh, on the other hand, is a master of defensive positioning.
McDonagh uses a low center of gravity to stuff takedowns and favors target-locking limb work, particularly attacking the joints. Watch how McDonagh targets Gable’s surgically repaired shoulder. The rotator cuff injury that sidelined Gable last year will be a major target for McDonagh’s armbars and hammerlocks.
If McDonagh can isolate that arm, Gable’s suplex game will be severely compromised. Gable will need to rely on his speed and transitional wrestling. He needs to catch McDonagh off guard with quick ankle picks and side headlock takeovers.
If Gable gets drawn into a slow, grinding match, the Judgment Day’s numbers advantage will inevitably come into play. Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan will almost certainly be at ringside. Mysterio has already vocalized his opposition to Gable getting any future title shots.
Their presence will force Gable to keep one eye on the floor, a distraction that McDonagh is expert at exploiting. This match is about more than just a win or loss. It is about Gable proving he can win the crowd's respect without the gimmick.
The fans in Atlantic City will be watching to see if the Olympic wrestler can find his old fire. My prediction is a hard-fought victory for Gable. He will face heavy interference from the Judgment Day, but a surprise save from a skeptical Otis could provide the opening Gable needs.
Look for Gable to counter a Devil Inside attempt into an ankle lock, forcing McDonagh to tap out at around the twelve-minute mark. A win here keeps Gable’s momentum building toward SummerSlam in Minneapolis. With WWE reportedly planning a major fan-participation entrance for his hometown crowd, Gable needs to keep winning.
The road to redemption is long, but a victory over McDonagh is the necessary first step.
