The Shocking Title Change That Nobody Saw Coming

Pull up a barstool, grab a cold pint of cheap domestic light beer, and let's talk about the absolute circus currently surrounding the Undisputed WWE Championship. Just when you thought Cody Rhodes was locked in for a marathon run, Triple H went and pulled the rug out from under everyone. At Night of Champions 2026, Sami Zayn pinned Cody Rhodes in a chaotic triple threat match that also featured GUNTHER to walk out with the gold.

Cody had just hit a bruising Cross Rhodes on the Ring General, but before he could cover, Sami flew in from the top rope. A desperate Helluva Kick connected, and Sami stole the pinfall in the 28th minute of a grueling match.

It was a massive feel-good moment for a guy who has spent years being the ultimate utility player on the roster. But if you think Sami is settling in for a long summer of title defenses, I hate to break it to you: his days at the top are already numbered. Backstage whispers are already getting louder, and the hard truth is that Sami Zayn is likely holding a placeholder belt.

The booking sheet tells a very different story from the underdog fairytale they are selling on television. Zayn is about to find out how quickly the corporate winds can change.

Zayn pinned Rhodes to win the title, but that was a pivot, not the destination. According to recent reports, the writing team is already looking at how to get the gold off him before we even hit the plane to Minneapolis for the next big show. It is the classic bait-and-switch that makes you want to throw your empty plastic cup at the screen, but from a business perspective, WWE has a much bigger fish to fry this summer.

The Original Plan for the SummerSlam Main Event

Let's look at the cold, hard facts that came out this week. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plan for the SummerSlam 2026 main event was supposed to be Cody Rhodes defending the Undisputed WWE Championship against a returning CM Punk. That was the money match WWE wanted to run, especially after Punk and Cody teased a feud back in April on the Raw after WrestleMania.

That segment drew a massive rating. The company was ready to build their entire summer season around that marquee singles match.

Sami Zayn was not even on the board for a major match at the show. He was completely left off the early internal line-ups for the event. The card was locked in before Rhea Ripley went down with a knee injury at Clash in Italy on May 31, and Sami was nowhere near the marquee.

The writers were focused on setting up a blockbuster card. They wanted Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Title, and Liv Morgan defending the Women's World Championship against IYO SKY.

Then you had the absolute madness of Oba Femi, who won the King of the Ring tournament to earn a title shot but threw it away to face Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell. When Ripley got hurt, the ripple effect threw the creative office into a frenzy, forcing them to shuffle the deck. That is likely how Sami ended up with the title at Night of Champions, but it does not change the fact that WWE still wants to get back to the Cody vs Punk match for the big blue belt.

The Grudge Matches Waiting for the New Champion

If Sami drops the championship before or at the event, he is going to need a high-profile opponent to keep his momentum alive. Let's look at the guys who could stand across the ring from him at SummerSlam 2026. The most obvious choice is Cody Rhodes, his former friend who is undoubtedly furious about getting pinned in that triple threat.

Cody and Sami are two of only five men to hold this specific Undisputed WWE Championship belt. They share that list with Roman Reigns, John Cena, and Drew McIntyre, making their history incredibly rich.

Sami has been complaining since the Royal Rumble about Cody getting preferential treatment from management. If Cody wants his title back, he might have to go through Sami in a non-title grudge match first.

It would be a classic battle of the two top babyfaces. They have the chemistry to pull off a classic, and it gives Cody a chance to get his win back after Sami stole his moment at Night of Champions.

Then you have GUNTHER, the Ring General who still has a massive target painted on Sami's back. Let's not forget that Sami is the man who ended GUNTHER's historic 666-day run with the Intercontinental Championship back at WrestleMania 40. More recently, Sami was the special guest referee on the June 19 SmackDown and cost GUNTHER a title match with a slow count, which is a receipt GUNTHER will want to collect with a series of brutal chops to the chest.

The Underdog's Enemies and Faction Warfare

Let's talk about Rey Fenix, a guy who actually managed to form a friendship with Sami on SmackDown. Sami successfully defended the United States Championship against Fenix in September 2025, and instead of beating him down, he showed respect.

But everything went south when Fenix was seen attending the funeral of the Gingerbread Man, which Sami took as a personal insult. Sami's attitude has taken a dark turn lately, and a betrayal of Fenix would be the perfect way to cement his heel turn on the big stage.

If they want to go for a massive return, CM Punk is the name on everyone's lips. Rumors are circulating that Punk could return on the July 6 episode of Raw in Chicago. Punk already has a victory over Sami, having pinned him in an Elimination Chamber qualifier back in 2025.

If Sami loses the title, a feud with a returning Punk would be a massive draw for the mid-card. That is especially true if Sami continues his paranoid, chip-on-the-shoulder routine.

We also have Drew McIntyre, who has been off television for a while but is rumored to be returning soon. There are plenty of plans for McIntyre's return floating around, and a match with Sami makes perfect sense.

Sami has never defeated the Scottish Warrior in a singles match, which is a stat the booking team can highlight. Drew could easily claim that Sami is a paper champion who does not belong in the same ring as a real heavyweight.

Finally, there is Randy Orton. The Legend Killer has been away for a while, but he has history with Sami, including beating him in the King of the Ring semifinals on the June 20, 2025 episode of SmackDown.

Sami also has Trick Williams, the current United States Champion who beat Sami at Backlash 2026 to retain his title. But regardless of who Sami faces, this title reign is a beautiful mess that WWE is going to have to clean up sooner rather than later.
