WWE Draft 2026 feels like a mid-card crisis for Raw

The 2026 WWE Draft was supposed to revitalize the brand split. Instead, it feels like the front office just hit the shuffle button on a playlist nobody wanted to hear. Raw managed to lose its identity in one night, shipping off three top-tier workers to SmackDown while leaving the red brand with a roster that feels like a house show loop from 2022.

Bron Breakker moving to Friday nights is the kind of move that reeks of desperation. SmackDown already has the star power to carry the weekly ratings, yet they snatched the promotion's most explosive young talent just because they could. Watching him spear people on Fox was a highlight of the last two years, but moving him away from the intense rivalries building on Raw is a tactical blunder.

SmackDown wins by default

The blue brand is effectively running a victory lap. By hoarding elite technical workers, they have made the mid-card title scene on SmackDown look more prestigious than the main event on Raw. It mirrors the 2004 draft, where Raw was stripped of its best assets, leaving Triple H to carry a stagnant product for months on end.

I am genuinely concerned for the mid-card talent left behind, like Ilja Dragunov. He spent the last six months perfecting his craft, putting on absolute clinics in 15-minute bouts, only to be left in a roster vacuum. When you look at the official roster updates, it is clear the creative team prioritizes the Friday night slot over the three-hour commitment of Monday nights.

The booking blind spots

The most egregious part of this draft is the lack of coherent storytelling for the tag team division. Splitting up stables that were just starting to find their footing is a classic Vince McMahon-era mistake that I hoped we had left behind in this new era. Seeing a tag team broken up during the supplemental picks on social media is a slap in the face to anyone who invested time in their character development.

The move of the women's division champion to SmackDown also leaves Raw without a centerpiece. This is not just a minor oversight. It is a fundamental failure to account for how a three-hour broadcast keeps an audience engaged. The 50 percent drop in momentum for some of these performers is going to be felt by next month's premium live event.

A path forward

If there is a silver lining, it is the potential for call-ups to finally fill the void. NXT has been producing talent at a breakneck speed, and they need to be pushed immediately. The NXT developmental pipeline is the only reason this draft won't be remembered as a total catastrophe for the red brand.

General managers need to stop playing favorites with the draft board. We need to see these new matchups deliver on the promise of fresh blood. If the first month of post-draft programming just results in rematches from the last quarter, the audience will move on. We deserve better than corporate shuffling.
