The Backstage Scoop
WWE NXT is preparing a major post-Bash raid on the free agent market. Raw and SmackDown are raiding the Tuesday night ranks, leaving Shawn Michaels with empty spots on his television roster. To fill those gaps, WWE is turning to a mix of international superstars, TNA standouts, and independent prospects.
This is not a slow rebuild. It is an aggressive, multi-layered acquisition campaign designed to reload the roster instantly. Reports from WrestleTalk point to seven major names currently on the WWE radar or locked into developmental paths.
The International Prize: Hiromu Takahashi
The biggest shockwave on the list is Hiromu Takahashi. The former multi-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion departed NJPW after a final appearance following NJPW The New Beginning in Osaka 2026, wrapping up a 15-year stint with the promotion. A move to NXT makes perfect creative sense due to a key roster connection.
Takahashi brings an unparalleled junior heavyweight resume to Florida. He is a record-setting four-time Best of the Super Juniors winner and a five-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. Now that he is a free agent, NXT represents his first chance to show his chaotic energy to a mainstream American audience.
Former Los Ingobernables de Japón teammate Takaaki Watanabe is already in NXT, performing under the name Naraku since his debut in May 2026. Naraku challenged NXT Champion Tony D'Angelo at the Great American Bash, establishing himself as a top heel. Placing Takahashi alongside Naraku in a modernized WWE version of their classic faction could give NXT a dominant new stable.
There is a catch. Takahashi is a junior heavyweight whose high-speed, high-risk style may not translate seamlessly to WWE's television-focused style. At thirty-six years old with severe neck injuries in his past, his physical mileage might dictate a slower pace under the WWE banner.
The TNA Exodus: Santana and Slater
WWE is also looking to exploit contract situations in TNA Wrestling. Mike Santana reportedly has one foot out the door after losing to Nic Nemeth for the TNA World Championship at Slammiversary 2026. Rumors indicate that WWE is interested in Santana as his TNA contract expires this summer.
Santana is best known to American fans for his tag team run alongside Ortiz in AEW and Impact. As part of LAX, he participated in brutal street fights and classic tag team encounters. His subsequent singles run in TNA proved he can work main-event style matches, but he has never been the undisputed top draw of a major national promotion.
Bringing him into NXT provides a safe, experienced hand to work with younger talents, though a main roster run seems unlikely. Santana has always worked best in structured tag environments. Thrusting him into a singles-heavy NXT environment could expose his promotional limits and booking fatigue.
Leon Slater is another TNA standout whose contract status has WWE salivating after he was spotted backstage with Triple H at Saturday Night's Main Event. His TNA contract is slated to expire later in 2026, making him a high-priority target. However, the 21-year-old risk-taker could easily get buried in a crowded NXT Performance Center roster without a distinct character.
Slater is widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in British wrestling, showcasing a spectacular high-flying style built around his signature 450 splash since signing with TNA in late 2023. WWE's interest is not new, as scouts have kept tabs on him since his UK indie days. If signed, his immediate path would likely involve a developmental tag team division run to ease his transition.
The WWE ID and Evolve Pipeline
Below the top-tier free agents, WWE is utilizing its developmental system to source fresh faces through the WWE ID program. Cappuccino Jones is the latest standout from the day-one class poised for a television debut after regular appearances on WWE Evolve. While his in-ring work is clean, his quirky coffee enthusiast gimmick has a very low ceiling on the main roster.
Harley Riggins is another Evolve heel name generating backstage buzz alongside partner Kam Hendrix. Riggins has drawn frequent comparisons to Triple H based on his physical look and hair. That visual similarity puts immense pressure on a young wrestler who has yet to prove his promo skills on television.
Harlem Lewis and Elijah Holyfield round out the internal pipeline. Lewis is a hard-hitting brawler who transitioned from Evolve to the WWE LFG show on A&E. Holyfield, the son of boxing legend Evander Holyfield, has the look and athletic pedigree but remains incredibly green in the ring.
His matches on LFG show sluggish footwork and poor ring positioning during basic transitions. Relying on a famous father's name will only carry him so far. NXT fans will demand in-ring substance immediately.
Probability Assessment
The probability of these debuts varies across the board, but the WWE ID signings are practically guaranteed. Jones, Lewis, Riggins, and Holyfield are already under WWE agreements and training at the Performance Center. We rate the pipeline signings as a 95% lock to appear by the end of the year.
Mike Santana is almost as certain after his championship defeat at Slammiversary 2026. We place the probability of Santana signing at 85% with a late summer debut. Leon Slater sits at a 70% probability, dependent on contract terms and whether AEW enters the bidding war.
Hiromu Takahashi remains the ultimate wild card. NJPW stars often prefer the freedom of the independent circuit or AEW partnerships. We rate the Takahashi signing at a 50% probability due to his physical limitations and deep loyalty to NJPW.
Expected Impact
If Shawn Michaels lands even half of these targets, the NXT roster will look vastly different by the fall. Santana and Takahashi would immediately step into the upper echelon of the card. A potential reunion between Takahashi and Naraku could spark a major faction war against Tony D'Angelo's Family.
The young Evolve standouts will flesh out the tag team and mid-card divisions. They will provide fresh opponents for the North American Championship scene. The next class of NXT is coming, and WWE is shopping in the premium aisles.
