Steve Anderson Williams from Victoria, Texas changed professional wrestling forever. At King of the Ring 1996 he cut the promo that started it all — "Austin 3:16 says I just whooped your ass" — and the Attitude Era was born in that moment. The blue-collar anti-hero who fought the boss, drank beer in the ring, and gave the middle finger to authority became the most beloved character in wrestling history. His feuds with Vince McMahon sold out every arena and drove WWE's Monday Night War victory.

King of the Ring — Austin 3:16
He defeated Jake Roberts in the finals of the King of the Ring tournament and cut the promo that changed everything. Jake had quoted John 3:16. Austin responded: "You sit there and thump your Bible and you say your prayers and it didn't get you anywhere. Talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16 — Austin 3:16 says I just whooped your ass." Ninety seconds that started a revolution.
1997–1998
Austin vs. McMahon — Biggest Story Ever
The blue-collar worker fighting the corrupt billionaire boss. Vince McMahon as Mr. McMahon — the ultimate villain — perfectly complemented Stone Cold's anti-authority rebel. Their feud drove WWE's comeback in the Monday Night Wars against WCW and produced the most profitable period in WWE history up to that point.
1999–2001
Multiple Championship Reigns
Six WWE Championship reigns between 1998 and 2001. WrestleMania victories. Feuds with The Rock, Triple H, The Undertaker, and Mankind that defined the golden age of professional wrestling. Every Stone Cold Stunner was a crowd eruption. Every beer toast was a celebration the entire arena shared.
Greatest Rivalries
vs Vince McMahon
The greatest storyline in WWE history. The working man versus the corporation. Every week produced moments that drove real water-cooler conversation across America. McMahon's despicable villainy and Austin's relentless defiance was a perfect storm of timing, character, and chemistry that may never be replicated.
vs The Rock
WrestleMania XV and WrestleMania XVII. Two icons of the Attitude Era colliding at the grandest stage. Their WrestleMania XVII match in Houston — with Austin turning heel by aligning with McMahon — remains one of the most controversial and discussed endings in WrestleMania history.
vs Bret Hart — The Hart Foundation
The Submission match at WrestleMania 13 was a masterclass. Austin refusing to submit while bleeding profusely — being carried unconscious from the ring rather than tap out — was one of the greatest babyface moments in wrestling history. It made him a star on the spot.
vs Triple H / DX
The power dynamics in WWF during the late Attitude Era saw Austin and Triple H on opposite sides of an authority war that captivated audiences weekly. Their matches were always hard-hitting, physical encounters with genuine heat — two performers at the absolute peak of their abilities.
