Championship Gold and Twitter Tears in Orlando
Pull up a barstool, grab a cold one, and let us get real about the wildest weekend in pro wrestling. From CM Punk dropping massive hints at a local MMA show to a former Attitude Era star crying on Twitter, the drama is off the charts. If you thought WWE's developmental brand Evolve was going to have a quiet summer, you have not been paying attention.
The Evolve Succession III special just hit our screens on Tubi, and the fallout is still burning up the internet. Let us start with the big story out of Orlando, where Evolve Champion Aaron Rourke successfully defended his crown against Max Abrams in a chaotic main event. Rourke walked out to the ring flanked by Cappuccino Jones, Marcus Mathers, and Sam Holloway, looking every bit like a superstar.
Abrams did not come alone either, bringing the full force of The Mog Squad with CJ Valor, Santi Rivera, and Jacari Ball in his corner. The match was a high-energy sprint that showed why both guys are highly regarded in the developmental system. Rourke ended up retaining his title after a series of heavy strikes, but the match was plagued by booking choices that left a bad taste in my mouth.
Instead of a clean finish, we got a massive post-match brawl involving half the locker room, with Shido Ash and Viktor Zanov running in to join the chaos. This kind of overbooked clutter hurts the championship. It makes the title feel like a prop in a never-ending turf war rather than the top prize on the show.
We saw a similar issue in the Evolve Women’s Championship match, where Nikkita Lyons defeated Wendy Choo to capture the title. Choo had Lyons locked in a submission hold and looked seconds away from a victory. Then Sloane Jacobs ran down to distract the referee, allowing Lyons to escape and hit her finisher for the pinfall.
It was a cheap way to end a championship reign, even if Lyons needed the win to establish her heel run. Over in the midcard, Kale Dixon picked up a victory over Kai Kavari in a decent singles match. Dixon looked sharp, hitting a clean vertical suplex and a rolling elbow to secure the three-count. But the real action happened online after the cameras stopped rolling at the Performance Center.
An Attitude Era Relic Strikes Again
Enter Val Venis, the guy who spent the late nineties pretending to be a adult film star and is now a full-time Twitter warrior. Venis saw Aaron Rourke, who is openly gay and proud of it, holding the Evolve Championship and decided he had to share his thoughts. In a post that was quickly shared across social media, as Ringside News reported, Venis claimed that catering to LGBTQ fans would cost WWE major money.
“ FACT: This PRIDE CRAP will cost WWE a lot in revenue if they decide to start catering to that crowd. PRIDE fatigue is very real. Rational folks are tired of this propaganda.”
Honestly, it is hard not to laugh at this level of hypocrisy. A guy whose entire career was built on wearing a towel and making cheap double entendres is now lecturing a massive corporation on business ethics and public decency. The irony is so thick you could cut it with a folding chair. WWE is pulling in record revenue, and Evolve is streaming to thousands of fans who actually want to see new talent.
This is not the first time Venis has played the internet troll to get himself some attention. Back in 2024, he went on a bizarre campaign targeting Nyla Rose online, attacking her gender identity and drawing massive backlash from fans. He seems to have a Google Alert set for any LGBTQ wrestler who gets a push in a major company.
It is a sad, desperate bid for attention from a guy who has not been relevant since the Y2K bug was a real threat. Fortunately, Aaron Rourke did not let the old-timer slide. The Evolve Champion took to Twitter and put the trolls in their place with a classic mic drop. As Ringside News noted, Rourke laughed off the haters and let them know exactly what he thought of their internet campaigns.
“Truly humored that these ‘people’ think their hollow words and insults can hurt me. I’m living my dream. Doing everything I wanted to do since I was 5 and what are you doing? Writing hate comments behind a faceless avatar or using my name to get you some views. Pathetic. 💅✨”
That is how you handle a Twitter troll. You point out that while they are typing madly into the void, you are holding championship gold and getting paid by WWE. And let us not overlook Max Abrams in all of this. Even though he lost to Rourke on the Evolve broadcast on June 24, 2026, the kid bounced right back.
Just two days later, Abrams defeated Chazz "Starboy" Hall at a Nightmare Factory Showcase event. He walked out as the new WWE ID Men's Champion, showing that Evolve's roster is absolutely loaded with talent. The future is bright for both of these guys, regardless of what some Attitude Era relic says on the internet.
The Best in the World Eyes the Blue Brand
Now, let us switch gears to the other side of the WWE Universe and talk about the Best in the World, CM Punk. Punk has been missing from WWE television ever since he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. He did make a brief appearance on the Raw after WrestleMania to confront Cody Rhodes, teasing a future match for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Since then, Punk has been chilling at home, recovering and keeping fans guessing. But on June 27, 2026, Punk showed up at Cage Fight Fury Championships 156. He was back in his hometown of Chicago, doing color commentary for the MMA promotion and having some fun with his co-commentators.
During the broadcast, they asked if he would be joining them for an upcoming CFFC event out of town. Punk smiled, looked at the camera, and dropped a massive hint. "Was that a Friday? It’s a Friday? I don’t know if I can make it…" Punk said.
For anyone who does not speak wrestling, Friday is SmackDown night. As WrestleTalk reported, this is a major hint that Punk's return to WWE TV will be on the blue brand. This makes total sense from a booking perspective. If Punk wants to go after Cody Rhodes and the Undisputed WWE Championship, he needs to be on SmackDown.
Tonight is the Night of Champions event, and the timing of Punk's tease could not be more perfect. Today marks the 15th anniversary of CM Punk’s legendary Pipebomb promo in Las Vegas. If there was ever a night for a shocking return, tonight is the night. The main event features Cody Rhodes defending his championship against Gunther and Sami Zayn in a massive triple threat match.
If Punk shows up after Cody retains, the pop will be loud enough to wake up the dead. It would immediately set the stage for a massive summer feud. But there is another major match tonight that will shape the summer. The King of the Ring tournament final features Oba Femi facing off against Jey Uso.
The winner of this tournament gets a shot at either world championship at SummerSlam. Jey Uso winning would be a disaster for fans who want logical storytelling. Uso has already been teasing a match with Cody Rhodes, reportedly at the behest of Roman Reigns. He could still turn on his Tribal Chief, but Jey holding the King of the Ring crown feels wrong.
Oba Femi winning and challenging Roman Reigns is the money match. He is a powerhouse who could match Reigns power for power. But the real x-factor is Brock Lesnar. Reports suggest Lesnar is set to return and cost Oba Femi the tournament final.
That would set up a massive rubber match between Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam in Minneapolis. That is a clash of titans that would sell out any stadium. If the King of the Ring winner chooses to go after Cody, Reigns will likely face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam.
If the winner picks Roman, Cody Rhodes is left with two options. He either faces Randy Orton in a WrestleMania rematch, or he goes head-to-head with CM Punk. Personally, I want to see Cody vs. Punk. The history, the promos, the crowd reaction—it would be absolute gold.
WWE has a lot of moving pieces right now, and they need to make sure they do not drop the ball. The Evolve show on Tubi has great talent, but the production needs to be sharper. Still, the buzz around Aaron Rourke shows that the brand is creating stars. The wrestling world is moving forward, whether the old-timers like it or not.
