Pull Up a Barstool and Let's Talk AAA and WWE Crossover Madness
Yo, bartender, slide another domestic draft down this way and keep the garlic fries coming, because we need to talk about the absolute fever dream that is professional wrestling in the year 2026. If you had told me five years ago that a reigning WWE champion would stroll onto a AAA broadcast in Mexico to call out his former stablemate, I would have had you cut off and called you an Uber. But yesterday, on July 4, 2026, that is exactly what went down on AAA Lucha Libre Worldwide, and as reported in the PWInsider Lucha Libre update, it was glorious chaos.
Let's set the scene for this madness. Rey Mysterio, who is currently acting as the General Manager of AAA, walked out to kick off the show. He did not come alone, though.
Mysterio introduced the newest roster member of AAA, and out walked none other than the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Damian Priest. Yes, that Damian Priest. He is the same guy who currently holds the WWE Tag Team Championship alongside R-Truth over on SmackDown.
Priest did not just stand there and wave to the crowd like a tourist. He grabbed the microphone and cut a promo in Spanish, making his intentions clear. He told the crowd that he is in AAA to dominate, chase gold, and that he did not fly down to Mexico to make friends.
It was a short, sharp punch of a promo. It did exactly what it needed to do, which was to set the wrestling world on fire.
The Judgment Day Soap Opera Crosses the Border
Here is where the storyline gets incredibly juicy. The gold that Damian Priest is likely chasing belongs to none other than Dominik Mysterio, who is the current AAA Mega Champion. Dominik won that championship by defeating El Hijo del Vikingo on September 12, 2025, at the Worlds Collide event in Las Vegas.
He followed that up by defending the title against Vikingo at Rey de Reyes on March 14, 2026. That match barred Vikingo from ever challenging for the Mega Championship again as long as Dominik holds the belt.
Now, we have Damian Priest entering the mix. Priest and Dominik have a long, complicated history from their days in the Judgment Day faction in WWE. The dynamic of Priest coming to AAA to take Dominik's title is brilliant booking.
It bridges the gap between two different promotions and keeps fans guessing. Both Priest and Dominik Mysterio are already scheduled to appear at the next AAA show on July 11, 2026, in San Luis Potosi, and fireworks are guaranteed.
It is wild to see WWE allowing a current champion to work dates for AAA. For decades, WWE operated like an isolated island, refusing to acknowledge that other promotions existed. Now, they are actively sharing talent and storylines.
It is a win for the fans, a win for the wrestlers, and it makes television feel unpredictable. If this is the future of wrestling partnerships, sign me up immediately.
The Edinburg Double-Header is a Ticket Seller's Dream
This crossover is not just limited to surprise television appearances. WWE and AAA are teaming up for a massive double-header event at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, on August 30, 2026. This is a single-admission event, meaning one ticket gets you into both shows.
The action starts early with Lucha Libre AAA at 11:00 a.m. CT. Then, the NXT Heatwave Premium Live Event kicks off immediately afterward.
The ticket sales for this show are going to be insane. The presale begins this Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. CT, and the public on-sale starts the next day, Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. CT. If you want to go, you better have your browser refreshed and your credit card ready on AXS because this will sell out fast.
It is a brilliant promotional strategy to bundle these two shows together in a hot market like South Texas. Promoting these events together maximizes the gate and creates a must-see atmosphere.
The talent advertised for the AAA portion of the card is a who's who of lucha libre stars, including El Grande Americano, La Parka, La Catalina, Mr. Iguana, El Hijo del Vikingo, Psycho Clown, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., and Galeno del Mal. On the NXT side, fans will get to see NXT Champion Tony D'Angelo, NXT Women's Champion Kendal Grey, North American Champion Myles Borne, Women's North American Champion Zaria, and the NXT Tag Team Champions, The Vanity Project. The broadcast details are also locked in, with the NXT portion streaming on Netflix internationally and airing on The CW in the United States, while the AAA portion will stream on YouTube in the US and air on FOX in Latin America. You can find more highlights and clips of the show featured in the PWInsider AAA video library.
The Rest of the July 4 Card and the Lazy Booking Trap
While the Damian Priest news took all the headlines, we have to talk about the rest of the July 4 broadcast. The show opened with some solid women's action where Lady Shani defeated Flammer in a non-title singles match. The finish was clean but involved some outside interference.
La Catalina ran down to ringside and prevented Flammer from using her championship belt as a weapon, which allowed Lady Shani to hit a diving double foot stomp off the top turnbuckle and secure the three-count at the 11-minute mark. It was a smart way to advance the feud between Flammer and La Catalina without making Lady Shani look weak.
We also got a fun three-way tag team match. La Parka and Mr. Iguana teamed up to defeat the team of Dinamico and Drago, as well as the Money Machine duo of Colmillo De Plata and Garra De Oro. Mr. Iguana is always entertaining with his toy lizard, and La Parka brought the crowd to their feet with his classic antics, eventually hitting a springboard splash to secure the pin at the 8-minute mark, keeping the crowd hot.
But now, let's talk about the main event, and this is where I have to throw some cold water on the party. El Fiscal faced off against Abismo Negro Jr. in a singles match that was actually building up to be a really good contest, featuring a beautiful top-rope Spanish Fly from El Fiscal for a very close near-fall. Then, the booking team decided to ruin it.
The match ended in a disappointing No Contest when Los Perros del Mal stormed the ring and laid out El Fiscal. The group, which was revived last month in June 2026, features Daga, Karmen Petrovic, Bronco Nima, and WWE's own Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo.
Look, I get that you want to establish Los Perros del Mal as a destructive force. But ending your television main event with a cheap, chaotic run-in that leads to a No Contest is just lazy booking. Fans tune in to see a resolution, not a giant brawl that resolves nothing.
It is a tired wrestling trope that AAA relies on far too often, and it hurt what should have been a great main event. If you want to make your television matches feel like they matter, you have to start booking clean finishes.
Is Bad Bunny Actually Coming to Mexico?
To top off the night, Rey Mysterio dropped another major tease during the broadcast. He announced that AAA is actively working on bringing global music superstar Bad Bunny to the promotion for a future appearance. Bad Bunny is a proven draw in WWE, having put on incredible matches at WrestleMania and Backlash.
If AAA can pull this off, it would be a massive coup for the promotion. It would also solidify the group's reputation for pulling off the impossible.
But let's be realistic here. Bad Bunny is one of the biggest music artists on the planet, and his time is extremely valuable. WWE can afford to pay him millions for a one-off match because they have massive TV deals.
Can AAA actually afford to bring him in, or is Rey Mysterio just blowing smoke to keep the hype train rolling? If they actually pull it off, it will be the biggest story in lucha libre history.
Until then, keep your eyes on the July 11 show in San Luis Potosi. With Damian Priest and Dominik Mysterio both scheduled to appear, the tension is going to be off the charts. Bartender, bring me one more round, because we are going to need it to process whatever crazy thing happens next in this WWE and AAA partnership.
