Hiromu Takahashi and the Japanese pipeline to Orlando

WWE NXT is preparing for a major roster reconstruction following the Great American Bash event on June 28, 2026. The brand is targeting several top free agents to rebuild its main event scene. The most significant target on the market is veteran Japanese junior heavyweight star Hiromu Takahashi.

Takahashi is officially on the open market after finishing his storied 15-year run with New Japan Pro Wrestling. He wrestled his final match for the promotion following the NJPW The New Beginning in Osaka 2026 event. As WrestleTalk detailed, the veteran is now highly sought after by promotions worldwide.

NXT is the frontrunner to secure his signature. The creative team wants to pair him with his former Japanese stablemate Naraku. Naraku debuted in Orlando on April 28, 2026, and quickly established himself as a top heel.

A pairing between these two former stablemates would instantly create a dominant new faction on Tuesday nights. This potential alliance comes at a perfect time for Naraku. He failed to capture the NXT Championship from Tony D'Angelo at the Great American Bash.

Bringing in a veteran ally like Takahashi would revive his championship pursuits. It also gives the NXT main event a fresh dynamic for the summer.

Santana, Slater, and the developmental influx

WWE is also looking closely at TNA Wrestling as contracts expire. Former TNA star Mike Santana is high on the recruitment list. Santana recently put over TNA World Champion Nic Nemeth at TNA Slammiversary 2026.

Reports indicate his current contract is expiring and WWE wants him in NXT immediately. Santana would bring veteran tag team and singles experience to the Performance Center. He has proven his main event value in both AEW and TNA over the years.

His arrival would immediately fill the void left by recent main roster call-ups. NXT management views him as a plug-and-play star for the upper card.

Leon Slater is another TNA standout on WWE's radar. The 21-year-old phenom has already appeared on WWE programming through the ongoing promotional partnership. Slater is an incredibly athletic high-flyer who fits the NXT style perfectly.

His TNA contract is scheduled to expire later in 2026. WWE wants to secure Slater as a high-priority free agent the moment he is available.

His previous TV appearances served as an informal tryout for the young superstar. NXT coaches were reportedly highly impressed with his work ethic, charisma, and in-ring speed. He represents the long-term future of the brand's cruiserweight division.

The WWE ID program is also preparing to transition independent talent to NXT TV. Cappuccino Jones is currently the standout performer on the WWE Evolve roster. Jones has built a popular character as a coffee enthusiast while demonstrating excellent technical wrestling.

He is expected to transition to the main NXT roster shortly. Evolve heel Harley Riggins is another name discussed for a television debut. Riggins has drawn comparisons to Triple H due to his physical appearance and classical heel style.

He has been working closely with Kam Hendrix in developmental. NXT writers want to bring their tag team act to television to bolster the tag division.

Hard-hitting star Harlem Lewis is also preparing for a Tuesday night call-up. Lewis impressed developmental trainers on the LFG show under the supervision of Booker T. His physical style would provide a nice contrast to the high-flying cruiserweights on the roster.

He has been working NXT live events to prepare for his debut. Second-generation athlete Elijah Holyfield is also on the fast track. The son of boxing legend Evander Holyfield has been training at the Performance Center.

After showing massive improvement on Evolve, he is ready for prime time. Coaches believe his athletic pedigree gives him a massive advantage in developmental.

The naming controversy and signing probabilities

The influx of new talent has already begun on television. A new signing made a surprise debut on the June 30, 2026, episode of NXT. Former NXT Women's North American Champion Tatum Paxley was brutally attacked after the main event.

The anonymous attacker laid out Paxley with multiple lariats and a Torture Rack. The attacker was identified by fans as recent Performance Center recruit Nikki Blackheart. However, announcers never mentioned her name during the broadcast.

As Wrestling Inc reported, the silent debut was caused by administrative delays. F4WOnline journalist Bryan Alvarez confirmed that WWE has faced trademark complications regarding her name.

"Apparently some trademark things involving Nikki Blackheart aren't finalized, which is why she had no name whatsoever in her NXT debut last night," Alvarez said. "But she'll likely have a name by this time next week."

Blackheart has recently wrestled under her real surname, Martinez, during NXT live events in Florida. The nameless debut was a minor booking blunder that distracted from an otherwise physical segment. The crowd responded with heavy boos as the show went off the air.

The booking team must resolve this naming issue before her next appearance.

The probability of Hiromu Takahashi signing with WWE NXT is currently moderate. While the Naraku reunion is creatively appealing, Japanese talent often hesitate to relocate permanently. Takahashi has spent his entire career in Japan and may prefer a lighter domestic schedule.

However, WWE is prepared to make a significant financial push. Mike Santana signing with NXT is highly likely. His TNA exit is virtually confirmed after his Slammiversary defeat.

He has achieved everything possible on the independent circuit and needs a new challenge. His transition to Orlando should be finalized by the end of July.

Leon Slater is another high-probability signing for the company. His relationship with WWE is already established through his developmental appearances in Orlando. He is young enough to spend two years in NXT before a main roster call-up.

Expect a contract offer the day his TNA deal expires. The arrival of these free agents will alter the balance of power in developmental.

The brand has struggled with depth since the spring call-ups. Adding veterans like Takahashi and Santana will stabilize the product. It also allows younger talent like Holyfield to develop without unnecessary pressure.
