A Card in a Holding Pattern

WWE Night of Champions 2026 is rapidly approaching, and the final card looks significantly different than what the weekly television product was building toward. Riyadh was supposed to host a night of high-stakes title defenses and logical tournament finales. Instead, creative adjustments and untimely injuries have forced WWE to call an audible on several major programs.

The result is a card that feels more like a holding pattern than a destination. Wrestlers are being shifted into fresh matches to preserve larger bouts for summer stadiums. Some of these decisions protect long-term storytelling, while others feel like missed opportunities to strike while the iron is hot.

Here are the six matches that were teased but ended up canceled for Riyadh:

  • The Vision vs. Street Profits for the WWE World Tag Team Championship
  • Trick Williams vs. Ricky Saints vs. Carmelo Hayes for the United States Championship
  • Charlotte Flair vs. Jade Cargill
  • Roman Reigns vs. Solo Sikoa for the World Heavyweight Championship
  • Roman Reigns vs. LA Knight for the World Heavyweight Championship
  • Oba Femi vs. Seth Rollins in the King of the Ring Final

The Tag Division and the Triceps Tear

The tag team division was heading toward a major rematch in Saudi Arabia. At Saturday Night’s Main Event on May 23, Logan Paul and Austin Theory, performing as The Vision, successfully defended their titles against the Street Profits. However, the victory came at a massive cost as Logan Paul suffered a torn triceps during the bout, immediately halting the group's momentum.

Theory tried to keep the feud alive by taking out Angelo Dawkins for several weeks. When Dawkins returned, Bron Breakker stepped into Paul's spot to represent The Vision. The fill-in team did not last.

On the June 22 edition of Monday Night Raw, The Street Profits finally defeated The Vision to win the World Tag Team Title, ending their chase. With the titles changing hands on free television and Breakker locked into a Steel Cage match with Seth Rollins, the planned PLE tag title match was scrapped.

This title change marks a historic milestone for the challengers. The Street Profits have now held the NXT Tag Team Championship, Raw Tag Team Championship, SmackDown Tag Team Championship, WWE Tag Team Championship, and the World Tag Team Championship. They are the most decorated duo in modern WWE history.

But instead of celebrating this legacy with a major defense in Riyadh, the new champions are left off the card entirely. The injury to Logan Paul has derailed a premier division storyline.

The Bloodline's Booking Stagnation

Roman Reigns' absence is the most glaring issue. Since his victory over Solo Sikoa on the Raw on Netflix premiere in January 2025, Reigns has acted as a part-time ruler. His reunion with Jimmy and Jey Uso after the physical toll of Clash in Italy was designed to reset the Bloodline hierarchy.

Jacob Fatu's role as the enforcer sent to SmackDown to call out Sikoa has created a tense stand-off. But by withholding Reigns vs. Sikoa, WWE is stretching the narrative thin.

Similarly, the postponement of Roman Reigns vs. LA Knight is a missed opportunity. Their history runs deep, stretching back to Crown Jewel 2023 when Reigns narrowly retained the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Knight has spent months building a rapport with the Usos before Roman's return, and he is furious to see the Bloodline take over WWE television again.

A match in Riyadh could have settled this rivalry, but instead, it is pushed back. This hesitation is causing a clear rift with the fan base, particularly regarding Jey Uso.

In a recent interview, Jey Uso explained that his reunion with Roman Reigns was purely a family matter.

“It’s a family thing, y’all ain’t got nothing to do with it”

Yet, the online response indicates the audience is growing tired of the repetitive Bloodline loops. On June 19, 2026, WWE uploaded a clip of Jey Uso defeating nineteen-year-old prospect Je'Von Evans on SmackDown. The YouTube metrics were brutal.

The video accumulated 21,809 dislikes against just 6,598 likes. Despite this clear negative reaction, Jey Uso stated he does not care about the online hate.

He claimed the hostility only feeds his motivation.

“If anything that lit a fire under me”

Ignoring this fan fatigue is a risky booking strategy. It leaves the Bloodline's central story feeling bloated and slow.

Shifting Rivals and Missed Finals

The midcard championship picture has experienced its own dramatic restructuring. Trick Williams' United States Championship reign, which began when he defeated Sami Zayn earlier this year, was supposed to culminate in a Triple Threat match. Williams, Hayes, and Saints are all former NXT and North American Champions, sharing years of history in the developmental brand.

The SmackDown match on June 19 changed everything. Saints hit Melo with a rolling elbow into a Code Red for a near-fall at 14 minutes, eventually securing the pinfall. This victory earned Saints a one-on-one shot at Trick in Riyadh, completely sidelining Hayes.

Meanwhile, the women's division has faced its own booking shifts. At Clash in Italy, Rhea Ripley retained the WWE Women’s Championship against Jade Cargill. The finish was controversial.

Charlotte Flair ran down to fight off Michin and B-Fab, then placed Ripley’s foot on the rope during a pinfall attempt. Cargill, Michin, and B-Fab retaliated by attacking Charlotte backstage after the event. They struck again on the June 19 SmackDown, ambushing Flair before her Queen of the Ring semi-final match against Liv Morgan.

Rather than letting Flair get her revenge in Riyadh, WWE has pivoted. Cargill will challenge Tiffany Stratton for the WWE Women's United States Championship, leaving the Flair-Cargill feud on ice.

Finally, the King of the Ring final will not feature the favorites. Oba Femi and Seth Rollins were widely expected to meet in the tournament final. Rollins held the NXT Championship 13 years before Femi held the same title, creating a compelling generational story.

That dream match died when Je’Von Evans defeated Saints, Talla Tonga, and Rollins to advance to the semi-final. The finish was marred by interference from Breakker and Theory. While WWE reportedly wanted to save Femi vs. Rollins for a larger stage, the decision leaves the Night of Champions tournament final feeling like a secondary prize.

Prediction: The Pivot Will Pay Off

WWE is gambling on delayed gratification. By canceling these six matches, the company is keeping its biggest bullets in the chamber. This approach risks making Night of Champions feel like an expensive house show.

The singles match between Trick Williams and Ricky Saints will likely steal the show. Saints has the work rate to push Williams to his absolute limits. I predict Trick Williams will retain the United States Championship after a grueling twenty-minute encounter.

Williams will win using a running knee strike after countering a springboard attempt from Saints. Carmelo Hayes will interfere post-match, establishing the Triple Threat match for the next PLE. WWE's pivots are frustrating, but the in-ring quality in Riyadh will save the show.
